BLAKE FELT BETTER. A lot better. For the first time in weeks, he actually felt...sane.
More than sane, of course. He felt incredibly powerful, and surprisingly helpless. He felt sated, yet starving for more. He felt as if heâd just discovered all of lifeâs secrets in Marthaâs armsâand as if he didnât know a damned thing at all.
Maybe he also felt crazy, along with sane.
Martha. Wonder infused him as he rolled onto his side, his arms wrapped around her, and peered into her face. Her cheeks were flushed, her lips shaped in a delectable pout. The elegant hollow at the base of her throat rose and fell with each ragged breath. Her eyelids were half-lowered, but her eyes were on him, dark and simmering.
He slid one of his hands down her arm to capture her hand. Lacing his fingers through hers, he thought about how those fingers had felt floating across his skin, warm and wicked. How theyâd felt arousing him, sliding up and down the length of him and then skimming the tip, where he was most sensitive.
His groin muscles clenched. Good grief, he was starving for more. More of Martha. Only Martha.
His accountant.
He laughed.
Her eyes widened. âWhat are you laughing at?â
âDonât you think this is kind of funny?â he asked, then tightened his grip on her hand when he saw the flash of indignation in her eyes. âI mean,â he added quickly, not wanting to offend her, âin your wildest dreams, did you ever imagine you and me ending up in bed together?â
She didnât answer immediately.
âI mean, itâs great,â he explained, when her silence had extended beyond a full minute. âFunny, but great.â God, that sounded lame, even to himself.
âUh-huh,â she grunted.
âPhenomenal.â His smile died as he acknowledged how true that was. Sex with her had been phenomenal. Incredible. Better than anything heâd ever experienced before. His groin muscles contracted again, just from the memory of how spectacular it had been.
He studied her expressive mouth, her thick lashes, her nose, her dark, glossy hair. âI mean it,â he murmured, leaning forward on the pillow they shared and planting a light kiss on the tip of her nose. âMaybe Iâve been imagining us in bed, too. Maybe it was subconscious, and I just didnât recognize it. But for a while now, Martha...Iâve been watching you and thinking, âThereâs more than just a great brain in there.ââ
âThank you.â She still sounded insulted.
âIâve been thinking about you at strange times, when I ought to be thinking about other things. Likeâlike this morning, when I should have been thinking about the meeting with Bruno, I was thinking about your legs.â
âMy legs.â She frowned.
âCome on,â he goaded her. âIâm telling you, the attraction has been there for a while, just beneath the surface. Iâm glad it finally came out.â
âIs that what this is about? Attraction?â
âYeah.â And sanity. And insanity. And chemistry. And craving. âYou have great legs. And the rest of you is pretty damned amazing, too.â
At last she softened, her mouth curving into a reluctant smile.
